2021 strongest year for IPOs in around 20 years

The auditing and consulting firm EY counted 2,388 newcomers to the stock exchange, 64 percent more than in 2020. The companies brought in a good 453 billion dollars (401.67 billion euros) – an increase of 67 percent. There were no IPOs in Austria in 2021.

In terms of both the number of IPOs and the volume of issues, 2021 was the strongest IPO year worldwide since 2000, EY reported on Tuesday. According to the analysis, the strongest growth was in Europe: Compared to 2020, the number of initial public offering (IPO) on European stock exchanges more than doubled from 191 to 485. The issue volume increased from $ 27.5 billion to $ 81.1 billion. The highest number of IPOs in a global comparison were again counted in China – including Hong Kong: 593.

EY partner Martin Steinbach reported that digital business models in particular were extremely popular with investors. “And at the same time there is an enormous amount of money in the market that is looking for promising investment opportunities.” All in all, the environment for IPOs is extremely good. “Also in the coming year there will be a large number of rapidly growing companies from the technology and healthcare sectors going public.”

Steinbach also sees growth potential for the German IPO market, which in 2021 reached the highest level since 2007 in terms of the number of newcomers to the stock exchange. The EY expert expects 17 to 23 IPOs in Germany in the coming year.

According to the evaluation, there were 22 IPOs on German stock exchanges in 2021, and 8 other local companies were drawn to foreign trading venues. In addition, there were 4 issues from so-called SPACs (Special Purpose Acquisition Companies). SPACs are initially empty company shells. They list their shares as a kind of placeholder so that they can later be merged with companies and thus bring them to the stock market through the back door.

According to EY calculations, the IPOs in Germany washed a total of 9.3 billion euros into the coffers of the companies, the IPOs of German companies on foreign stock exchanges came to a total issue volume of 1.8 billion euros.
