Car numbers increased in 2023: electric share low, VW most popular brand

The country of car drivers is Burgenland; in Vienna the car density is half as high. The winner of new registrations in 2023 by vehicle type is the motorhome with a significant increase of 6.7 percent; the industry leader in cars is and remains VW. When it comes to electric cars, Tesla leads Statistics Austria’s vehicle figures.

The bottom line is that the number of registered cars increased by 0.7 percent or 34,116 in 2023 compared to 2022. The level of motorization remained stable at 566 cars per 1,000 inhabitants. The total number of registered motor vehicles increased by one percent to 7.34 million.

2.5 percent fewer diesel cars

The number of diesel cars fell by 2.5 percent to 2.58 million, while the number of gasoline cars remained almost stable at minus 0.3 percent. An increase of 41.1 percent was recorded for purely electric cars with 155,490 vehicles, while hybrid cars increased by 32 percent for gasoline engines and 34 percent for diesel engines.

The diesel share of the overall market was highest in Carinthia, while most gasoline-powered cars and electric cars were registered in Vorarlberg. Vienna had the highest proportion of hybrid cars. Most cars were registered in Lower Austria, followed by Upper Austria and Styria.

VW is the most popular car brand

VW remained the most common car brand in Austria with a share of 19.9 percent, ahead of sister companies Audi and BMW as well as VW subsidiary Skoda. When it comes to electric cars, Tesla was in the lead with a market share of 17.4 percent as of December 31, 2023, followed by Volkswagen with 14.2 percent.

In the previous year, 507,996 commercial vehicles of class N1 (up to 3.5 tonnes maximum permissible total weight, the classic parcel delivery small delivery vans) were registered (plus 1.9 percent), while there was a decrease of 0.4 percent in the number of tractor units at 20,170. With 488,990 tractors in the field, an increase of 0.9 percent was recorded.
