The economy suffered the worst fall in 6 months in December and closed 2023 with a drop of 1.6%

Economic activity fell 4.5% year-on-year last December and in eThe accumulated twelve months of the year closed with a decrease of 1.6%, The National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (Indec) reported this Thursday through its Monthly Economic Activity Estimator (EMAE).

Meanwhile, in the last month of last year activity showed a drop of 3.1% compared to November in the seasonally adjusted measurement and 0.4% in the trend-cycle series.

In relation to the same month of 2022, in December ten sectors of activity that make up the EMAE registered increases, among which Fishing (+8.8% year-on-year) and Agriculture, livestock, hunting and forestry (+8.1% year-on-year) stood out.

This last sector was, in turn, the one with the greatest positive impact on the interannual variation of the EMAEfollowed by Exploitation of mines and quarries (+6.2% yoy).

As opposed, The branches of activity with the greatest negative impact were “Manufacturing industry” and “Wholesale, retail trade and repairs”.

For their part, five sectors of activity registered falls in the year-on-year comparison, among which stood out Financial intermediation (-12.2% yoy) and Manufacturing industry (-11.9% yoy). Together with Wholesale, retail and repair trade (-8.5% yoy) they contribute 3.6 percentage points to the year-on-year fall of the EMAEspecified the Indec.

The next EMAE technical report with the preliminary estimate of January 2024 it will be released on Tuesday, March 26, 2024.
