The CEO of Google parent company Alphabet, Sundar Pichai, believes that a global set of rules for the use of artificial intelligence is necessary. “We need international rules for artificial intelligence. That’s why we should think about a transatlantic framework, or even better: a global framework,” Pichai told the “Süddeutsche Zeitung”.
Praise for the EU’s AI law
The company boss welcomed the European Union’s planned AI law. “The AI Act, in its current form, strikes a good balance between innovation and responsible safeguards. This balance should be maintained as it moves through the legislative process,” Pichai said.
Negotiators from the European Parliament and EU countries agreed on regulating AI in December after long negotiations. At the beginning of February, representatives of the EU states also agreed to the proposal. The approval of the EU Parliament is still missing.
Different risk groups for AI systems
In the future, AI systems will be divided into different risk groups. The higher the potential dangers of an application, the higher the requirements should be. The hope is that the rules will be copied around the world.
When asked whether many jobs will disappear due to artificial intelligence, Pichai replied: “First of all, I believe that artificial intelligence will create new jobs.” For example, you will need people “who ask the big language models the right questions.
A whole new type of profession will emerge. But of course certain jobs are also being displaced. That’s why we as a society need to work on upskilling and ensure we reskill people when necessary. We have to put safety nets in place.”
