Labor market: Minister Heil: Need more skilled workers and workers

Many companies in Germany are urgently looking for skilled workers. The government wants to address several issues – and today will show examples of how employees can be recruited.

In view of the shortage of skilled workers in Germany, Federal Labor Minister Hubertus Heil (SPD) has called for increased employment of women, older people and foreigners, among others. “Securing skilled workers means securing prosperity,” Heil told the German Press Agency before a government skilled workers congress in Berlin this Monday. “There are currently more people in work than ever before – over 46 million. Nevertheless, we need more skilled workers and workers in order to fully exploit our potential as the third strongest economy.”

All possibilities must be used. “It’s about increasing the participation of women, older employees and people with disabilities in the workforce.” It is also about more training and further education and fewer young people without a school or vocational qualification. “And it’s also about recruiting bright minds and helping hands from abroad for Germany.”

To achieve these goals, he invited over 700 representatives from business, associations and society to the one-day congress. “On this day we are making the many good ideas for securing skilled workers that already exist today more widely known,” said Heil, who wants to open the congress in the morning together with Education Minister Bettina Stark-Watzinger (FDP) and Economics Minister Robert Habeck (Greens).

The aim is to show that the traffic light collectively sets all the levers in motion to attract skilled workers, said Heil. “Together we will spread the good examples so that many people can benefit from them.” The German Skilled Worker Prize will be awarded for the first time on Monday evening. Over 500 applications were submitted.
