The financier and member of the Rothschild banking family, Lord Jacob Rothschild, has died at the age of 87. The art lover and his family are estimated to be worth £825 million.
Lord Jacob Rothschild, British financier, patron of the arts and member of the Rothschild banking family, has died at the age of 87. His family announced this on Monday, as British media reported. In their statement, the family described Lord Rothschild as an “outstanding presence in the lives of many people.” According to Jewish custom, he should be buried in a small circle.
According to last year’s Sunday Times Rich List, Jacob Rothschild and his family have an estimated fortune of 825 million British pounds – the equivalent of around 964 million euros.
Lord Jacob Rothschild was an art lover
Lord Rothschild was born in Berkshire, west of London, in 1936. After studying history at Christ Church College, Oxford, he joined the family bank NM Rothschild & Sons before setting up his own wealth management fund in 1989. Rothschild also held a number of leadership positions, including being deputy chairman of the media group BSkyB.
The Briton was also known as a philanthropist and art lover. Between 1985 and 1991 Rothschild was a Trustee of the National Gallery and Chairman of the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
The roots of the Rothschilds go back to the late 18th century, when Mayer Amschel Rothschild, the family patriarch, opened his first banking house in Frankfurt. His sons expanded the bank into a multinational corporation, and the newfound wealth enabled the Rothschilds to influence the local economy.
Many people reacted to the Rothschilds’ rapidly growing wealth with anti-Semitic conspiracy myths. The family has been cited as a prime example of Jews who allegedly use their money to control global financial institutions. Although this claim has been repeatedly refuted and shown to be false, it still persists today.
