Every year around 400,000 new apartments are to be built in Germany – these are the plans of the Ampel coalition. In October, however, the number of permits fell for the first time.
In terms of building permits for apartments in Germany, the year-over-year trend continues to improve despite a dampening in October.
In October, according to the Federal Statistical Office, the authorities approved 29,597 applications for new buildings and renovations, although seasonally and calendar-adjusted 3.2 percent less than in the previous month. In the period from January up to and including October 2021, however, a total of 4.2 percent more apartments were approved than in the same period of the previous year, as the Wiesbaden authority announced on Wednesday.
According to the information, the plus within ten months affects almost all types of building in new buildings. There was an increase of 3.4 percent in single-family houses, 26.3 percent more in two-family houses and 2.4 percent more in multi-family houses. Only for dormitories were fewer building permits issued than from January up to and including October 2020 (minus 24 percent).
In October alone, the number of building permits for new buildings for single-family homes rose by 1.4 percent to 6,888 units compared to the previous month. In the case of apartments in two-family houses, there was an increase of 2.5 percent to 2,466. In the case of multi-family houses, on the other hand, there was a decrease of 6.7 percent to 15,475 units.
The number of building permits is an important indicator of new construction in the fight against the housing shortage in many cities. In some cases, however, apartments are approved but not initially built – for example because tradespeople and construction companies have no capacity due to the high demand for real estate. The new federal government made up of the SPD, the Greens and the FDP has decided to ensure that 400,000 apartments are built in Germany every year.
