Russian President Vladimir Putin is open to dialogue with his Ukrainian counterpart Vladimir Zelensky, but he must be understandable, prepared and result-oriented. This was announced to reporters by the press secretary of the Russian leader Dmitry Peskov on Thursday, December 16.
On possible contacts between Putin and Zelensky “there is no clarity yet,” Peskov said.
“My colleague [замглавы администрации президента России Дмитрия] Kozak, there are contacts with the office of the President of Ukraine. There is still no clear clarity about the possible agenda for such contacts, because it is difficult to link the issues of bilateral relations with the international economic project SP-2, ”the Kremlin spokesman said.
The day before, Zelensky said at a press conference following his meetings in Brussels that he would like to use the situation with the Nord Stream 2 (SP-2) gas pipeline to meet with the Russian president. He noted that “some progress in the implementation of“ Minsk ”could be resolved.
Earlier that day, the Ukrainian leader said that Kiev was ready for any format of negotiations with Moscow. He stated this at the Eastern Partnership summit in Brussels after a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
Following the summit, Zelensky, Scholz and Macron called for the resumption of constructive work in the Normandy format and to ensure the implementation of the agreements reached at the meeting in Paris on December 9, 2019. The parties also agreed to do everything possible to stabilize the situation in Donbass.
At the same time, Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin said that the participants in the Eastern Partnership summit did not discuss Nord Stream 2, but discussed the overall situation with Ukraine.
During a press conference on November 26, Zelensky said that SP-2 is not just a business, but a tragedy for Ukraine. He expressed the hope that the European Union and the United States, as promised, will help Kiev to guarantee energy security after the launch of the gas pipeline.
The construction of Nord Stream 2 was completed on September 10. It was built from Russia to the Federal Republic of Germany along the Baltic seabed with the aim of direct gas supplies to Europe. The EU countries mainly support the project and participate in its implementation. The Baltic states, Poland, the USA and Ukraine are opposed.
Since 2014, Kiev has been conducting a military operation against the residents of Donbass, who refused to recognize the results of the coup d’etat and the new government in Ukraine. Kiev blames Moscow for this situation. Russia has repeatedly stated that it is not a party to the internal Ukrainian conflict.
