Thuringia’s largest ski area files for bankruptcy – winter was too mild

The season for skiers was short in Thuringia last winter. This had a negative impact on a well-known ski resort operator. Provisional insolvency administration has now been ordered.

Thüringen Alpin GmbH, the operator of the Silbersattel ski arena and the Schmiedefeld winter world, suffered from the short winter and got into financial difficulties. The Meiningen district court has ordered provisional insolvency administration, said lawyer Kai Dellit from hww hermann wienberg wilhelm in Erfurt on Wednesday. He was appointed provisional insolvency administrator. Thüringen Alpin GmbH currently operates the two ski areas in the Thuringian Forest with ten employees and 34 seasonal workers.

The Silbersattel ski arena on the 842 meter high Fellberg in Steinach is the largest alpine ski area in Thuringia with eight routes. The Schmiedefeld winter world has two slopes, a fun park as well as a children’s area and a toboggan area. Because of the mild temperatures and too little snow, significantly fewer guests came last season, according to the provisional insolvency administrator.

Ski resort in Thuringia has stopped operations since mid-February

Ski operations had already been stopped in mid-February, explained the company’s managing director, Axel Müller. “We now lack the money to get through the low-sales summer months.” Outside the winter season, the Silbersattel ski arena is used as a bike arena. It is still open to visitors.

The aim of the insolvency proceedings is to restructure the company. All options are currently being examined. Dellit explained that he was “optimistic that the renovation will be successful with the support of the municipalities in which the lifts are operated and the Free State of Thuringia.

According to its own information, hww hermann wienberg wilhelm is a service company for legal advice, reorganization and restructuring.
