The former Minister of Economy Martin Guzman criticized the economic program of the government of Javier Milei by pointing out that “the adjustment the people are paying, not the caste” and, faced with an eventual renegotiation with the IMF, I consider that “It would be very serious to ask for more money”.
“The adjustment is being paid by the people, not by the caste. And especially some sectors. With retirees, what is being done is mistreatment. The wolf was released. In that sense, he referred to the liquefaction of the savings and of the income of society due to the devaluation and the inflationary jump. “No one should be celebrating 13% monthly inflation. I think there is an idea of a government program, but I don’t see that the objective is the recovery of real wages. “Inflation is possibly the main problem of the Argentine economy at this time, but along with it is the sharp drop in the purchasing power of income.”he evaluated.
Martín Guzmán’s self-criticism about the deficit in Peronist governments
Guzmán acknowledged that “the deficit must be reduced” in Argentina, but he considered that “not in any way.” Following that line, attempted a self-criticism for the role of Peronism in the management of the economy by pointing out that “We give the right the opportunity to talk about important issues such as the prosecutor, the efficiency of the State, the problem of caste, which exists, because there are privileges, and we must end them.”
“The cost of the adjustment today is being paid by the middle class, retirees and informal workers. They are reducing the deficit without taking social issues into account. They are generating great inequality. “I am convinced that this scheme is going to leave Argentina with more inequality, more violence and more insecurity,” added the former minister.
Martín Guzmán warned about the seriousness of taking on new debt with the IMF
On the other hand, Guzmán referred to the monumental debt that Argentina maintains with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) based on the loan granted to the government of Mauricio Macri in 2018, about which he warned that “It would be very serious to ask him for more money” to the organization, and considered that “that debt is poison”.
“Never has a country received so much money. That money was not used to make Argentines better off. It was used to finance the outflow of capital to those who had entered to speculate. at the time when the current minister (Luis Caputo) had a key role in the Cambiemos government. That money did not stay in Argentina,” he clarified.
Regarding the possibility of a new renegotiation of the agreement with the Fund, the former minister said that “I am not surprised that the Government wants to take on more debt. That debt is poison. There should not be a single more dollar of debt with the International Monetary Fund. We have a huge debt, the account has to end there. “Looking for more money to dollarize would be doing greater damage to Argentina.”
