Warning strike at German airports is being extended

Actually, the airport staff was only supposed to stop working on Thursday. Now the Verdi union is going one better and calling for a strike on Friday. However, different airports are affected than the day before.

Anyone who had planned to fly quickly and cheaply to warm weather before the Easter season can now only hope for a bit of luck: The Verdi union also called on aviation security staff to go on warning strikes at several German airports on Friday. According to Verdi negotiator Wolfgang Pieper, it will then gradually affect the five airports of Hanover, Dortmund, Weeze, Dresden and Leipzig. Hanover Airport announced on Wednesday: “For this reason, no departures will be possible on Friday, March 15, 2024 between 00:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. Arrivals are not affected.”

Verdi has already called on aviation security forces to carry out warning strikes again at five German airports this Thursday. According to the union, the all-day strike will gradually affect Hamburg, Stuttgart, Karlsruhe/Baden Baden, Cologne and Berlin airports over the course of the night. Passengers can no longer enter the security area. An expansion of the strike had not previously been ruled out.

The strike will cause flight cancellations and delays

According to the airport association ADV, around 90,000 passengers will have to prepare for flight cancellations and delays due to the announced warning strike on Thursday at the five German airports. The association is currently expecting more than 580 canceled flight connections on Thursday alone.

Aviation security collective bargaining concerns the working conditions of around 25,000 employees of private security service providers. On behalf of the Federal Police, they check passengers, staff and luggage at the entrances to the security area.

The demand: 2.80 euros more hourly wages

So far, five rounds of negotiations in the collective bargaining dispute have failed to produce any results. During the first wave of warning strikes at eleven airports, more than 1,100 flights were canceled. Verdi is calling for an hourly wage increase of 2.80 euros over a period of twelve months, with overtime bonuses starting more quickly from the first hour of overtime.
