Labor market: After Corona: More employees want to change jobs

According to a survey, many employees are looking for new jobs – and not just because the opportunities on the labor market are good.

According to a new survey, employees in Germany are increasingly willing to change jobs. Only around 53 percent of those surveyed completely agreed with the statement that they intended to still be employed by the same company in a year. In 2018, this proportion was around 78 percent, and it has been falling continuously since then. This emerges from a current survey by the consulting firm Gallup.

Expert Enzo Weber from the Institute for Labor Market and Occupational Research in Nuremberg also confirms that there is a greater willingness to change in the labor market than during Corona times. In his view, this is a normalization to pre-pandemic levels.

Reasons for changing jobs

Employees change jobs when there are good opportunities on the labor market, explained Weber. “That is currently the case.” In addition, companies are increasingly hiring and recruiting workers elsewhere.

Another reason for the increased willingness to change could be that employees are no longer satisfied with their jobs or there are upheavals so that they are looking for more lucrative employment – as is currently happening with digitalization. “This is something that happens during transformation. I wouldn’t see that as a warning signal,” emphasized Weber.

According to the Gallup survey, employee loyalty and trust in their company’s prospects have recently declined. Accordingly, 19 percent of those surveyed said they had no emotional connection to their employer – the highest level since 2012.

Extrapolated to employees aged 18 and over in Germany, that is 7.3 million employees who have internally resigned, Gallup said. At the same time, only around 40 percent said in the survey that they had complete confidence in their employer’s financial future – so, with the exception of a high during the Corona period, this value has been falling for years.
