Energy: Munich company produces “renewable gas”.

A young company from Munich wants to accelerate the German energy transition. And to do this, it has built a facility in Spain that is unique in Europe and possibly the world.

The Munich-based company Turn2X has opened what it claims is the first production facility in Spain for the commercial production of renewable and climate-neutral natural gas in Europe. The plant, which opened in Miajadas in the Extremadura region in the west of the country, will accelerate the German energy transition, the company said.

By 2030, Turn2X wants to cover ten percent of Germany’s natural gas needs with “green methane”, which is produced around 300 kilometers southwest of Madrid from green hydrogen and CO2.

“As far as we know, it is also the first (commercial system) in the world,” said Philip Kessler, co-founder and CEO of Turn2X, when asked by the German Press Agency. According to the company, non-commercial systems already exist elsewhere.

Connected to Germany

The Miajadas plant has a capacity of two megawatts and can generate around two gigawatt hours of renewable natural gas annually. The plant is connected to Germany via an existing natural gas pipeline, so deliveries to German customers are scheduled to begin later this year.

According to the company, which was founded in 2022, a key advantage of the system is its high level of flexibility: it can be started up or shut down quickly and is therefore particularly suitable for power supply from wind power and photovoltaic systems. There is a great need for the climate-neutral and reliable energy source, especially in medium-sized industry and shipping, but also among municipal suppliers.

Kessler said they are convinced that the process will work not only technologically but also economically. “To do this we need the scaling that we want to implement now.” Turn2X plans to build a plant with an output of at least nine megawatts this year. The location will also be in Spain.
