Companies, cities, communities: this is how digital Upper Austria is

The digital presence of many local companies can be expanded.

Every autumn, the OÖNachrichten lists Upper Austria’s 250 companies with the highest sales. Their technical presence on the Internet can still be expanded. This is the conclusion reached by a study by the Vienna agency Otago. This was the ninth time that we analyzed the companies’ websites and their page speeds. Once again, the largest municipalities, cities and state capitals also came under the microscope.

For the evaluation, Otago again used Google’s analysis tool “PageSpeed Insights” with a maximum of 100 points. Anyone who had fewer than 50 points missed the minimum. With 50 to 89 points they were in the middle of the field, with more than 90 they were at the top.

Google’s criteria for loading times are strict: the content of a page that is visible without scrolling must be available in less than a second. Content on the desktop typically loads faster than on mobile displays.

“User demands have increased in recent years. Anyone who doesn’t have a fast website is at a competitive disadvantage,” says Jan Königstätter, who founded Otago with Markus Inzinger at the end of 2013. Königstätter sees Upper Austria generally on the right track, but there is room for improvement – especially when it comes to speed on mobile phones. Four percent of all companies examined achieved 90 points or more in this category in 2023. In 2022 it was six percent.
