The Bundestag called Nord Stream 2 not only an economic project

The Nord Stream 2 (SP-2) project is not an exclusively economic project. This opinion was expressed on Sunday, December 19, by the chairman of the Bundestag Foreign Policy Committee, Social Democrat Michael Roth.

“And I must admit that Nord Stream 2 is not a purely economic project, even if it is being implemented by a dozen European companies from 12 EU member states. It has, of course, a political aspect as well, and this is a topic that causes headaches for many partners in the EU, ”Roth said on the radio station Deutschlandfunk.

Berlin, in talks with Moscow, Roth added, was trying to allay Kiev’s fears that the launch of the SP-2 would become a problem for Ukraine and would not supply gas to Europe through it.

On December 17, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced that the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline is a commercial project and the Federal Grid Agency makes decisions on it without being guided by politics.

According to him, private investments have been made in the pipeline. The Federal Chancellor also noted that the issue of compliance of Nord Stream 2 with European energy legislation is under consideration.

On the same day, German Finance Minister, leader of the Free Democratic Party Christian Lindner said that the German government is invariably interested in cooperation with Russia and the SP-2 issue is only in the legal field. He believes that the West should not use the pipeline as a means of putting pressure on Russia.

On December 14, the new Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer announced that Nord Stream 2 is an important project ensuring the security of energy supplies to the European Union. According to him, any sanctions against the pipeline “will only harm the European Union,” so you should not use the SP-2 as a lever of pressure on Moscow.

In October this year, Russian President Vladimir Putin called it nonsense to say that the country is building Nord Stream 2 not for economic gain, but in order to deprive Kiev of gas transit. According to the leader, the Russian Federation does not use any weapons, including in the economy. He described as chatter statements that Moscow allegedly uses gas as a weapon.

The construction of the gas pipeline was completed on September 10. It was built from Russia to Germany along the Baltic seabed with the aim of direct gas supplies to Europe. The EU countries mainly support the project and participate in its implementation. The Baltic states, Poland, the USA and Ukraine are opposed.
