115 shortage occupations: long list for 1,065 foreigners

This means that it is to be expected that these 49 professions and a further 66 from the nationwide shortage professions list will finally appear in the Labor Ministry’s skilled workers regulation 2022 in the middle of this week. Nationwide, 21 professions have been added since the previous year, and six in Upper Austria.

In practice, this should mean that foreign workers who work in one of these professions can get a red-white-red card more easily and permanently. By the end of November 2021, 1,062 people had traveled to Austria with it, of which 365 were in Vienna and 237 in Upper Austria.

On this list there are professions for which a penetration rate of up to 1.5 was recorded. This means that for every vacancy registered with the Public Employment Service (AMS) there are a maximum of 1.5 registered unemployed.

Criticism before prescription

For the Upper Austrian Chamber of Commerce, this statement, which has been practiced for years, that there are too few people for certain professions, falls short. “The shortage occupation list does not reflect the real need: Many companies no longer report the workers they need to the AMS,” says President Doris Hummer. In addition, only professions with a completed training are listed – something that is impractical for drivers is said by transport companies, for example.

While the AMS assumes that the seasonal regulation, which has also been adapted, can cover the needs of local businesses, the tourism industry is less confident: the need is three times as high. (sib)
