Energy: Construction begins on BMW battery plant in Lower Bavaria

Approval for the early start came last week, and the heavy machinery for the construction of the new BMW battery plant is already rolling out in Lower Bavaria.

Construction work on the new BMW battery plant in Lower Bavaria has begun. The removal and relocation of the soil began on Tuesday with heavy equipment, a spokesman confirmed. The Straubing-Bogen district office granted approval for the early start of construction last week.

BMW wants to build a factory in the communities of Irlbach and Straßkirchen for the assembly of up to 600,000 high-voltage batteries per year. The construction is controversial; critics complained, among other things, about the loss of valuable arable land. In a referendum last fall, a clear majority of the citizens of Straßkirchen voted in favor of the work.

According to BMW, they selected the location from 20 candidates – among other things because of its proximity to the group’s Bavarian factories where the batteries are to be installed. After the first expansion stage, around 1,600 people will work in the plant.
