Will you no longer be able to fill shower gel soon? And no longer rush to drink water bottles at the airport? Great Britain wants to relax hand luggage requirements. But the changeover is taking longer than planned.
At British airports, passengers will in future be allowed to take containers with more than 100 milliliters of liquid in their hand luggage – but the government is now giving some airports more time to make the change. Baggage checks should actually be easier from June 2024. To this end, new types of scanners are to be installed at airports that allow a better view of luggage.
The Ministry of Transport in London announced on Thursday that some airports would not have been able to upgrade security checks accordingly in the allotted time, citing, for example, delivery problems and complex construction work. Extensions would now be granted on a case-by-case basis for up to one year.
Unpacking laptops is no longer necessary
When traveling this summer, passengers must continue to check which rules apply at the respective airport, the ministry said. Currently only 100 milliliters are allowed per container and these must be stored in a small, transparent plastic bag. In the future, it will no longer be necessary to unpack laptops and other electronic devices in Great Britain.
Consumer advocates from the British organization Which? criticized the fact that different rules can now apply at airports. The organization warned the PA news agency that the confusion could lead to further delays. According to the ministry, if the schedule for the conversion at the airports is not adhered to again, there could be financial penalties.
The new CT scanners are already being used in some control lanes at some German airports such as Munich and Frankfurt. However, according to EU regulations, strict liquid restrictions still apply.
