Thanks to the success story of ChatGPT, Upper Austrian companies are currently very open to the topic of artificial intelligence (AI), say the two AI experts Michael Affenzeller (FH Hagenberg) and Andreas Pfleger from the internationally active innovation consultant Zühlke. For this Swiss consulting company, Upper Austria, as an industrial country, is a key region for AI.
The problem: The expectations of companies are huge, the knowledge of what exactly can be done with AI is diffuse and the quality of the available data is poor and can only be used for AI after extensive preparation. Affenzeller: “There is often still a backlog here, and it requires a lot of preparatory work, which is often not so exciting, until it becomes really interesting from a methodological point of view and you can actually implement the expected advantages and potential profitably.”
Pfleger does not currently see the greatest potential for artificial intelligence in production – “a lot has already been automated here. However, a really big lever lies in its use in knowledge work,” says Pfleger.
Human to AI: “Construct me a machine”
He cites the example of plant manufacturers, such as those that are strongly represented in Upper Austria, who could use AI to massively accelerate product development and thus the time to market readiness. The knowledge that has been stored in thousands of documents inside and outside the company over decades can be easily converted by the AI into plans and information for a new system using a voice command like “Design me a machine that can do xy” – all in one Fraction of the time and cost.
