Agriculture: Scholz talks to farmers about relief for the industry

Farmers across the country have been protesting for weeks against cuts in agricultural subsidies. The Chancellor will meet with industry representatives next week and talk about planned relief measures.

With a view to planned relief for agriculture, Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) will meet with industry representatives next week. Scholz will meet with members of the Agriculture Future Commission on Thursday, a government spokeswoman said in Berlin. The Chancellor wants to exchange ideas with the members of the Commission about possible measures to relieve the burden on farmers. Excessive bureaucratic requirements should also be addressed.

The spokeswoman referred to a statement made by the federal government in the course of a bill being passed in the Bundesrat. It is now important to work out the concrete measures.

In March, the Federal Council gave the green light to the controversial reduction of subsidies for agricultural diesel. In a protocol statement from the federal government, ten points were mentioned that needed to be “implemented quickly”. This includes reducing requirements and unnecessary bureaucracy. In addition, the so-called tariff smoothing is to be reintroduced for six years. When calculating income tax, not just one tax year is used, but several. This means that yield losses due to extreme weather, for example, can be compensated for.
