The Government now points to the industrial promotion regime of Tierra del Fuego and announced that it will seek to modify it: It benefits a few

The Minister of the Interior, Guillermo Francosdescribed the regime as “a system that benefits a few, I am not saying that it does not benefit Tierra del Fuego as a whole because there is a lot of local work”and assured that it generated “a series of acquired rights that are very complex to go back on.”

In an interview on Radio Rivadavia, Franks stated: “There is a situation of tension over the benefits of the regime with other governors that at some point we will have to resolve. “We do not have parliamentary majorities, but we are going to try.”.

Tierra del Fuego Regime: the Government recognizes that it will need parliamentary agreement

As he stated, the President “knows that it is a privileged situation that must be redirected in some way,” although he clarified that It cannot be resolved by decree but requires parliamentary consensus.

“It cannot be resolved immediately”shielded itself from the tax benefits established since 1972, basically concentrated in the production of cell phones, televisions and air conditioning equipment, which enjoy advantages such as exemption from VAT, profits and the non-imposition of tariffs on imported inputs.

Despite the fact that the president was able to specify that the regime extended until 2028 “nor it is touched because there are acquired rights”its minister admitted that there is a desire to correct the asymmetries with respect to other provinces.

“If that source of work is removed, perhaps there are people who will be left out of the system. In Tierra del Fuego they seek to protect the islands, it is a geopolitically important place for the country, which must be protected, but perhaps the mechanism for protection is not the most appropriate“Francos pointed out regarding the regime.

Franco’s criticism of Gustavo Melella

In another passage of the interview, the interior minister questioned the governor of Tierra del Fuegor, Gustavo Melellafor rejecting the presence of the Chief of the United States Southern Command, Laura Richardson. “He made a wrong gesture toward the US embassy. It caught our attention and the president decided to travel to Ushuaia himself,” he said.

“What can I say about Melella? That she was wrong,” Francos concluded.
