After years of construction, the XXL shopping center in Hamburg’s Überseequartier was scheduled to open at the end of April. Water damage now causes a longer delay.
It was supposed to be a lavish celebration, including an appearance by superstar Rita Ora. Now the disillusionment comes before the party: The opening of the Westfield shopping center in Hamburg’s Überseequartier, planned for April 25th, will probably be postponed by four months due to water damage. The center is now scheduled to open to visitors at the end of August, the operator Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield (URW) announced on Thursday.
It was said that groundwater had leaked into an important technical system in part of the basement on the construction site. “An analysis of the damage began immediately in collaboration with our planners and engineers.” URW is building an XXL quarter on the site, which includes 170 shopping and restaurant spaces as well as offices, apartments, three hotels and a cruise terminal.
Überseequartier is scheduled to open after the summer holidays
URW also justified the decision to postpone the opening by four months with the summer holidays, which in Hamburg last from July 18th to August 28th. The Überseequartier is part of the Hafencity, which is considered Europe’s largest inner-city urban development project. There had already been delays on the URW construction site. At the end of October there was also a fatal accident during construction work on the southern Überssequartier. Scaffolding collapsed into an elevator shaft, killing five people
