Rail transport: Bahn hired 22,000 new employees this year

Deutsche Bahn wanted to hire at least 18,000 new employees this year. This number was clearly exceeded – but we also said goodbye to thousands of employees.

With additional employees, Deutsche Bahn wants to drive the expansion of rail transport in Germany. According to its own information, the state-owned company made 22,000 job commitments this year.

These included 2,410 engineers as well as maintenance workers, train drivers and dispatchers.

“The mobility transition needs committed employees,” said Martin Seiler, Head of Human Resources. The railway is investing at a high level in infrastructure, vehicles, stations and in personnel. It was agreed with the union side that at least 18,000 new people would be hired this year and next. This number was clearly exceeded.

However, the railway also loses thousands of employees every year, mainly due to reasons of age. The bottom line is that the number of employees in Germany grew by 2000 this year, according to the company, after an increase of 5000 in the previous year. Deutsche Bahn now employs a total of 219,000 people in Germany and 337,000 worldwide.
