Hospitality industry: Burger roasters and Co.: system catering is growing strongly

System catering in Germany grew significantly last year. Sales were well above pre-Corona levels.

Last year more people went to McDonald’s, Burger King and Co. and spent more money there. This gave the German system catering industry a strong increase in sales compared to the previous year of 14 percent to 31 billion euros, as shown in the annual report of its federal association published on Monday. Compared to the pre-Corona year 2019, there was also a significant increase: here the increase is 29 percent.

According to the report, the main drivers were higher spending per visit. The average receipt was 6.57 euros. That was 22 percent more than in 2019. A large part of this is likely due to price increases due to inflation in recent years. There were also more visitors: compared to 2022, it was up 8 percent. This meant that for the first time there were more customers than before Corona.

Almost half of sales (49 percent) came from take-out from the restaurant. 35 percent were consumed on site, 8 percent were sold directly to the car, and 7 percent were delivered.

The Federal Association of System Catering in Munich represents various system catering providers – from classic fast food providers such as McDonald’s or Burger King to coffee chains such as Starbucks and steakhouses such as Abacco.
