Energy: Gazprom becomes the most important pipeline gas supplier for China

Because of increasing tensions with the West, the Russian leadership announced years ago that the country would turn its economy towards the East. This is also evident in gas deliveries.

The majority state-owned Russian energy company Gazprom has become the most important supplier of pipeline gas to China. In February, the company exported 2.5 billion cubic meters of gas via the “Power of Siberia” line, the Russian news agency Interfax reported, citing Chinese customs. The long-standing record holder Turkmenistan only exported 2.4 billion cubic meters in the same period.

Because of increasing tensions with the West, the Russian leadership announced years ago that the country would turn its economy towards the East. This trend has intensified following the outbreak of the war of aggression against Ukraine ordered by Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin. In contrast to Western countries, Beijing did not condemn Moscow’s invasion or impose sanctions.

According to the project declaration, the “Power of Siberia” pipeline, which was put into operation in 2019, has a capacity of 38 billion cubic meters per year. Russia also supplies liquefied natural gas (LNG). In February this was the equivalent of 593 million cubic meters. This puts the country in fourth place among China’s LNG suppliers. Including LNG and pipeline gas, Russia has long held the leading position in gas deliveries to China.
