Government facilitates import of books for the 2024 edition

Like every year, in April the Book Fair returns to La Rural with around fifteen hundred exhibitors from more than forty countries.

Through the Decree 346/2024published this Tuesday in the Official Gazette, issued by the Presidency and signed by Luis Caputo, Minister of Economy, it was established exemption from payment of certain taxes and fees for the importation of books and materials related to the editorial industry.

The exemption specifically applies to products that will be displayed, given away or sold during the “FORTY-EIGHTH BUENOS AIRES INTERNATIONAL BOOK FAIR EXHIBITION”, an event that will take place in Buenos Aires on the dates indicated.

The decree

  • Exempts the payment of taxes on the importation of books, including books of prints, atlases and musical books, for the fair.
  • Applies to books originating in and coming from the countries participating in the fair.
  • Set a maximum amount of US$15,000 by participating country for tax exemption.
  • Exempts the payment of VAT and internal taxes on the sale of books to the public at the fair.
  • Instruct the AFIP to ensure that the books are destined exclusively for the fair.

The objectives of the standard

According to the official text, the measure seeks to promote technological, commercial and cultural exchange at an international level. As well as strengthen “the positioning of the Buenos Aires Book Fair in Latin America” and “promote reading.”

Likewise, the measure facilitates the importation of books for the fair, “which can help increase the variety and quality of books available to visitors” and “reduces the cost of books for fair visitors, which can make the fair more accessible to the public“.

Book Fair 2024: when it starts, times and where to buy tickets

This Thursday, April 25, the International Book Fair returns to the City of Buenos Aires, one of the main cultural events of the year in the Buenos Aires capital at the La Rural property. On this occasion there will be around fifteen hundred authors from more than forty countries and the Guest City of Honor will be Lisbon, the capital of Portugal.

This Thursday’s opening will be led by the writer Liliana Heker starting at 6:00 p.m.although the doors will be open from 2 p.m. The Fair will run until Monday, May 13.
