After the announcement of global job cuts at the US car manufacturer Tesla, cuts are also becoming apparent for the only European Tesla factory in Grünheide.
The worldwide planned job cuts at Tesla also affect hundreds of jobs in the US electric car manufacturer’s only European factory in Grünheide near Berlin. The company announced in a statement that it would cut 400 jobs. In order to avoid redundancies for operational reasons, the company is planning a “volunteer program” for employees. Discussions would begin with the works council to implement this program. Tesla did not initially provide any details.
“The currently weak sales market for electric cars also poses challenges for Tesla,” was one of the reasons given for the job cuts. Last week, the car manufacturer announced that the contract of 300 temporary workers in Grünheide would not be extended. The company’s contractual partner has already been able to place the majority of the affected temporary workers, Tesla said. More than 12,000 people now work at the plant in Grünheide.
Tesla boss Elon Musk wants to cut more than one in ten positions in the company and thus more than 14,000 jobs in view of the slump in the market for electric cars and weak sales worldwide.
