Smartphone manufacturer: Xiaomi’s first electric car is well received in China

Xiamoi’s first electric car was brought onto the market at the end of March. Now at the international motor show in Beijing, the smartphone manufacturer is drawing positive conclusions.

The Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi says it has had a successful start in the electric car market. The SU7, the Beijing group’s first electric car, has already received 75,723 orders just 28 days after its market launch, company founder Lei Jun announced on Thursday at the international motor show in Beijing.

5,781 vehicles have already been delivered to customers. This is a record for the launch of a newly launched brand. 100,000 units are expected to be delivered by the end of the year, more than initially targeted.

Xiaomi launched the SU7 at the end of March and announced prices between 27,700 and 39,000 euros. Xiaomi is advertising its first vehicle as being, in a certain version, faster than an electric Porsche Taycan. The design of the SU7 is also reminiscent of models from the Stuttgart manufacturer.

Other companies outside the industry are also pushing into the electric car market in China. The telecommunications giant Huawei and Baidu, a Chinese counterpart to Google, are involved in electric cars. There is a bitter price war on the market. German providers such as VW and BMW are lagging behind the Chinese competition in the electric car sector and want to catch up.
