Federal Government: Habeck wants to strengthen Germany as a pharmaceutical location

Economics Minister Habeck takes two days to visit pharmaceutical locations in three federal states. He holds out the prospect of state aid.

Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck wants to strengthen Germany as a pharmaceutical location. The Green politician promised state aid to establish production facilities for “critical health products”. Habeck goes on a two-day “pharmaceutical trip” and visits companies in Hesse, Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt.

There have been repeated supply problems and bottlenecks for some medications, such as antibiotics, in recent years. After a meeting with medium-sized companies in Frankfurt, Habeck said that there were good reasons not to allow “perhaps vital products” to be produced only abroad, in Asia or in China. If you want production in Germany, “then we will not be able to avoid supporting these companies financially,” he said, with a view to more favorable production conditions, especially in Asia.

With the federal government’s pharmaceutical strategy, there was a certain directional decision that critical health products should be produced in a certain quantity in Europe or Germany.

At the start of his trip, Habeck visited the young biotechnology company Zedira, which is developing the world’s first active ingredient against gluten intolerance, and the Merck Group in Darmstadt.
