Bundestag deputy from the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party Steffen Contre reacted to the statement of German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock that the certification process for Nord Stream 2 (SP-2) should proceed on the basis of European legislation. On December 23, Contre expressed his opinion on this issue to Izvestia.
“This sounds pathetic. Only the Federal Grid Agency is responsible for this stage of certification. If the new government of Germany renounces its national interests and, together with the EU, will support actions against the implementation of the SP-2, this means only one more delay and additional costs for consumers, ”Contre said.
According to the AfD deputy, there is no need to wait for the process of accelerating the certification of Nord Stream 2.
“During periods of high gas demand, the launch of a strategically important project is delayed due to deliberate delays on the part of the federal government to the detriment of consumers. And there is a risk that new obstacles will appear. The new federal government is even more dependent on the EU and even less willing to represent the national interests of Germany than the past, ”Contre added.
A day earlier, Berbock said that she and Chancellor Olaf Scholz had worked out a common position on the launch of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. She stressed that the launching of the project will be considered in the light of energy security, which is important for Germany.
On December 22, the deputy of the Landtag of the federal state of Hamburg Olga Petersen told Izvestia that Scholz understands that without Russian gas, most of Europe will freeze. According to the German politician, it is in the interests of the FRG that gas is delivered to Europe through the Nord Stream 2 pipes as soon as possible.
The day before, The Wall Street Journal noted that Berlin could become another sore spot for Washington, since the new Chancellor Scholz refuses to view Nord Stream 2 as a political project.
On December 20, Wolfgang Büchner, deputy official representative of the German Cabinet of Ministers, stressed that Scholz considers Nord Stream 2 an economic project. According to Buchner, the German government will work together on all issues related to the gas pipeline.
Earlier, on December 16, Germany postponed a decision on certification of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline until at least mid-2022.
The construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline was completed on September 10. It was built from Russia to Germany along the Baltic seabed with the aim of direct gas supplies to Europe. The EU countries mainly support the project and participate in its implementation. The Baltic states, Poland, the USA and Ukraine are opposed.
