Mother’s Day? Anyone who gets a little hectic when hearing this word should be reassured: there is still a little time to think about a little thoughtfulness. What is most often given as a gift?
According to a survey, German citizens want to dig deeper into their pockets for this year’s Mother’s Day than before. The German Trade Association (HDE) published a survey in Berlin according to which people in this country want to spend 1.03 billion euros on the occasion of this special day, a good five percent more than in 2023.
Of the 1,500 respondents aged 18 to 69, almost a third said they wanted to spend money because of Mother’s Day – this proportion rose slightly by 0.2 points to 31.7 percent. The survey was carried out by the market research institute IFH Cologne on behalf of the HDE.
The most common gift is flowers, but food, invitations to restaurants, cosmetics and gift vouchers also play a role. On average, a German citizen in the age group 18 to 69 spends 18.40 euros. However, this average value includes the two thirds who don’t want to give anything – for people for whom this day is important and who want to dip into their wallets, the average expenditure is around three times as high. The tradition of Mother’s Day comes from the USA, and it has also been celebrated in Germany since 1923. This year it is on May 12th.
