The staff of a bar in England had a secret Christmas party – without inviting the boss. The operator found out about his employees via the surveillance cameras.
As a bar employee, the temptation to join in with the guests can be great – or just throw your own party when the place is empty. The staff at the Definitely Maybe Bar in Bolton, UK, seized the opportunity. The employees organized their own Christmas party without further ado – only they hadn’t invited the boss to it.
The employees carefully planned the party on a Monday evening. Traditionally, there is not much going on in the bar on this day. So drinks from the bar’s inventory were served, there was a wet and happy celebration in Christmas costumes. Even a musician performed. The boss wasn’t there, but still got wind of the event: His employees had forgotten that what was going on in the bar was being filmed by a surveillance camera.
The boss takes the secret party with humor
Paul Gallagher, operator of the “Definitely Maybe Bar”, was able to follow exactly what was going on from his sofa at home, reports “Manchester Evening News” among others. He published screenshots of the surveillance images on social media. Even if he wasn’t invited to the party and the employees partied during working hours, the boss had no grudges. “Shoutout to our employees,” he wrote on Facebook. “They have their own Christmas party and don’t invite the bosses.” In the same breath he wished “Merry Christmas, you bastards”.

The staff could have expected to be caught. He often checks the surveillance images from home to make sure that everything is okay in the bar, said the 42-year-old operator. Even after the staff heard on the bar’s social media channels that they had been exposed, the party continued. Without further ado, the staff hung a Santa hat in front of the camera.
Just don’t drink too much
The employees do not have to fear any consequences. Paul Gallagher, who runs the bar with his brother, takes the whole thing with humor. It is nice for the guests to see the bartenders on the other side of the counter, and his employees deserve a lively evening inside after the hard Corona year. “I thought it was a bit cheeky, but it didn’t bother me,” he said. The boss only had one concern: “I just didn’t want her to drink too much, because we had a long week ahead of us.”
