These are good times for skilled workers because they can choose more than ever where they want to work. But where exactly is that? The market research institute Trendence asked 21,000 skilled workers which employer they would most likely apply to. The results are like that star exclusively in advance. Surprising answer: One in six skilled workers named at least one car manufacturer or supplier as their preferred employer, despite all the problems in the industry.
Of course, the clear result does not only have to do with the quality of the jobs. According to the Trendence Institute, an employer’s reputation often depends on how well and how intensively it advertises for employees. And also how they are perceived publicly in completely different areas.
In addition to the car manufacturers, only the Bundeswehr was able to hold its own in the top 5 – despite or perhaps because of the greater attention that the military in Germany has received since the widely proclaimed turning point. In addition, the Bundeswehr is one of the country’s largest employers with over 80,000 civilian and 180,000 military employees.
Skilled workers trend: less security, more customer contact
The Trendence Institute carries out the survey annually. Two trends are emerging here: public sector employers such as customs, police or the Foreign Office that are perceived as safe are no longer as popular as they were immediately after the pandemic. The employment agency, for example, slipped from 12th to 15th place as an employer.
On the other hand, retail companies are perceived as somewhat more attractive again. The drugstore chain dm gained ten places and is now in 16th place, Aldi Süd made it up to 12th place. However, the most popular retail company is clearly Amazon in 7th place.
If you take the industries as a whole, the automotive industry is ahead. A total of 16 percent named them as one of their preferred employers. This is followed by the public sector (15 percent) and retail (10 percent).
For the study, the Trendence Institute surveyed 21,000 skilled workers online: “Which of these employers would you most likely apply to?” There were over 250 to choose from and multiple entries were possible. The respondents had an average age of 37 years. The vast majority had completed training, some were still in training, some had also completed a master’s degree or attended a technical school.
