Video game: The next “Grand Theft Auto” won’t come until fall 2025

Fans of “Grand Theft Auto” will have to be patient: the next game in the series won’t be released until late in 2025. The previous edition has now been purchased more than 200 million times.

The highly anticipated next game in the “Grand Theft Auto” series will not be released until fall 2025. The games company Take-Two Interactive named the somewhat more precise period, after previously only general mention of the calendar year 2025.

It wasn’t just fans who were hoping for an earlier release date: the share price fell by a good two percent in after-hours trading after the announcement. So far, only a one and a half minute trailer has been released for the game – last December.

The setting of “Grand Theft Auto VI” is a fictional version of the US metropolis Miami. The trailer features fast car rides, fast motorboats, beaches, weapons, crocodiles and many characters, including a protagonist named Lucia.

GTA V has already sold 200 million copies since 2013

The previous edition, “Grand Theft Auto V,” was released in 2013. Take-Two also announced that the game had now been purchased 200 million times. The gaming website “Kotaku” reported at the end of March that the developers still needed time and that autumn 2025 was the more likely date, although the developer company Rockstar had at times aimed for a release at the beginning of the year. “Kotaku” also wrote at the time that management even feared a delay until 2026.

At Rockstar owner Take-Two, sales fell by three percent year-on-year to $1.4 billion in the last quarter. The bottom line is that after a billion-dollar write-down, there was a loss of a good $2.7 billion, after being in the red of $730 million a year earlier.
