Argentina and Paraguay signed an agreement to promote the commercialization of deforestation-free soybeans

This agreement aims to establish the conditions for compliance and verification of Paraguayan soybeans free of deforestation from January 1, 2025.

Private sector entities Paraguay and Argentina signed a formal agreement to work together and promote the commercialization of deforestation-free soybeansstarting January 1, 2025. This commitment, as officially reported, has the main objective of generating the necessary tools to certify the traceability of Paraguayan soy production and comply with the environmental standards established by European Union Regulation 2023/1115.

After a year of work, CIARA-CEC (Chamber of the Oil Industry of the Argentine Republic and Center of Cereal Exporters); the Union of Production Guilds (UGP), the Federation of Production Cooperatives, the Paraguayan Chamber of Exporters and Marketers of Cereals and Oilseeds (CAPECO), and the Paraguayan Chamber of Oilseed and Cereal Processors (CAPPRO), all entities of Paraguay , signed a joint work framework commitment. ANDThis agreement aims to establish the conditions of compliance and verification of free Paraguayan soybeans. of deforestation since January 1, 2025.

The inter-union memorandum of understanding signed on May 16 is part of the context of Decree 1541/2024 and Resolution number 368/2024 of the MIC -Ministry of Industry and Commerce of Paraguay- to promote voluntary adhesion systems that allow, based on Paraguayan legislation, to demonstrate the sustainability of its production and meet the demands of international markets.

Deforestation-free soy: what the agreement establishes

The agreement signed by CIARA-CEC and the entities of the Paraguayan agro-industrial chain establishes concrete measures to develop a single soybean management and traceability system in Paraguay equivalent to ViSeC in Argentina, as well as the connection between both platforms for the purposes of making more efficient export documentation from Paraguay. From this commitment she begins to work on the implementation stage that will take place between May and December of this year so that all Paraguayan soybeans under temporary admission for processing and subsequent export are free of deforestation.

The commitment between Paraguay and Argentina also aligns with joint efforts with the European Union to ensure that The production and export of soybeans from both countries comply with European Union Regulation 2023/1115. As of December 30, 2024, this Regulation prohibits the introduction into the European market of products that contain or have been produced using soy associated with deforestation. This agreement not only reinforces the regional cooperationbut also ensures that both countries can remain reliable suppliers in the European market under the new environmental standards.
