In April of this year, Some 1,296,255 cubic meters of fuel were sold to the publicbetween gasoline and diesel. This is the lowest sales volume in the last 34 months: you have to go back to June 2021 (with 1,157,630 cubic meters sold) to see a lower number.
In the comparison against April 2023, fuel sales showed a decline of 13.7% and they mark the strongest decline in the last 41 months and the fifth consecutive with that result; Compared to the previous month (March 2024), sales decreased 6.9%.
These data published by the consulting firm Politikon Chaco mark a consolidation of the downward trend in fuel sales to the public throughout the country.
Fuels: volume by type
Analyzing the sales by fuel typeIn April, the highest sales volume was in gasoline with 55% of the total sold versus 45% for diesel.
In reference to their performances, gasoline showed a drop of 11.4% year-on-year although with high disparity depending on the segment:
- super gasoline sales fall 6.8% year-on-year,
- the premium ones do it at -24.2%,
- Regarding diesel, the drop was 16.5% year-on-year (common oil fell 19.1% and premium oil fell by -10.7%).
Evolution of fuel sales by district
April continues to show highly negative performances within the national territory. This month, only two of the twenty-four subnational jurisdictions showed increases in the year-on-year comparison:
- CABA with +1.9% (supported by gasoline that grew 5.2% vs. -7.4% for diesel) and
- Río Negro with +0.3% (driven by diesel with +3.7% vs. -2.8% for gasoline).
On the contrary, In the remaining twenty-two jurisdictions, fuel sales contracted. The slightest drop is observed in Catamarca (-9.5%); but the rest of the districts fall in double digits with high deviations.

By case, In two provinces the drop was greater than 30% (Misiones with -32.2% and Formosa with -35.1%, the strongest declines in the country).
In In 21 of the 24 subnational jurisdictions, gasoline dominated sales over diesel, in terms of volume, as observed for the national total. Within them, the extremes are ratified:
- In CABA, the highest concentration of gasoline sales is verified (grouping super and premium) with 76.2% of its total marketed volume;
- Río Negro exhibits the lowest participation among the districts with predominant gasoline (50.6%).
At the same time, In only 3 provinces was diesel (also grouped as common and premium) the one that registered the highest volume sales: Córdoba (52.3%), Mendoza (57.5%) and La Pampa (58.5%).
Participation by company
In April, the company YPF concentrated 54.7% of total sales, followed by Shell, with 23.1%, and Axión (PAE) with 12.1%. The rest of the companies participated in 10.1% of the month’s sales.
