Against the backdrop of cold weather, Gazprom set a record for the extraction of gas from storage

Against the background of a sharp drop in average daily temperatures in Russia, Gazprom has made a record increase in gas withdrawal from underground storage facilities. This is stated in a message published on the company’s website on Monday, December 27.

“Since December 22, the production complex of Gazprom has been operating in the mode of autumn-winter highs. The reason is abnormally low temperatures, which are recorded on average per day – up to –17 degrees in the regions of the UGSS (Unified Gas Supply System. – Izvestia), ”Gazprom said.

As the company said, this temperature is below the climatic norm by nine degrees. So, in St. Petersburg on the night of December 26, the thermometer dropped to -23 degrees.

On the same day, Gazprom announced a historic record for daily gas supplies to China via the Power of Siberia pipeline.

Earlier, on December 14, the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) signed an agreement with Gazprom on a significant increase in gas exports to China in November-December at a meeting of the Joint Coordinating Committee.

During negotiations with President of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on December 15 that relations between Russia and China are a real model in the 21st century. The head of state also said that bilateral relations are distinguished by determination to turn the common border into a belt of eternal peace and good neighborliness.

At the same time, on December 18, Nikkei Asia reported, citing a source, that the two leaders discussed the Power of Siberia – 2 project, the design of which began on May 18 of the previous year. It was clarified that the parties have yet to agree on the price of the proposed fuel supplies. According to the source, the launch of the pipeline will allow Russia to eliminate its “dependence on the European market.”
