Economic policy: Leading business associations warn of weakening Europe

The EU is of central importance to them, say leading associations of German business. They are therefore making an appeal to those eligible to vote in the European elections.

Shortly before the European elections, the leading associations of German business highlighted the importance of the European Union for prosperity in Germany. “The European Union is of central importance for German companies and their employees,” they said in a joint appeal. “We encourage all citizens eligible to vote – here and throughout the EU – to exercise their right to vote and send a signal for Europe. Only with a strong EU will we be able to promote prosperity and security for all.”

The leading associations of German business stand for European integration and are committed to a smart and generation-appropriate development of the EU. “We clearly reject all efforts to divide and weaken Europe.”

There are fears that right-wing populist parties will gain strength in the European elections taking place in Germany on June 9. The appeal comes from the presidents of the Confederation of German Employers’ Associations, the Federation of German Industries, the German Chamber of Industry and Commerce and the Central Association of German Skilled Crafts.

The associations are also calling for an EU policy that enables companies and employees across Europe to fully exploit their potential. “This includes reversing the bureaucratic burden. This is the only way we can make our contribution to the European transformation processes and to a good and generation-fair future for Europe.” The election decision on June 9 is therefore a decision about the direction of future European policy on core economic issues.
