In recent months, the number of bankruptcies in Germany has risen again and again. In May, the Leibniz Institute for Economic Research in Halle identified a different development.
According to the IWH, the number of bankruptcies of partnerships and corporations in Germany fell again in May for the first time since November 2023. A further decline in the number of insolvencies is already emerging, the Leibniz Institute for Economic Research Halle (IWH) announced on Thursday.
In May, the number of bankruptcies in Germany was 1,271. This corresponds to a decrease of seven percent compared to the previous month. In April, according to the IWH, a record high was measured for the third time in a row. However, the current value is still 40 percent higher than the same month last year and 31 percent above the May average for the years 2016 to 2019, i.e. before the corona pandemic.
The downward trend in the number of insolvencies will continue in June, it said. However, this decline started from a high level. From the IWH’s point of view, the number of insolvencies will therefore remain above the level before the pandemic for some time to come.
For its study, the institute evaluates the current insolvency announcements of the German registry courts and links them with balance sheet figures of the companies affected.
