“Although we are rushing from one employment record to the next, total working hours have only increased slightly over the past 15 years. In total, we are even working less than in 2019,” says Agenda Austria economist Denes Kucsera.

The first break occurred during the financial crisis, and since then the volume of work has increased less than the number of dependent employees. A second break came with the corona pandemic. The amount of work fell by 0.5 percent. Kucsera: “This is mainly due to the trend towards part-time work, which is promoted by our tax system. For many people, working more is hardly worth it.” This could be Austria’s downfall: In the majority of EU countries, the volume of work is increasing. “This is one of the reasons for the weak economic growth in Austria.”
