What increased the most and the least, according to the INDEC

Inflation in May stood at 4.2%, with strong increases in communication, education, alcoholic beverages and tobacco; and foods and non-alcoholic beverages. In the disaggregated, there are products in the basket that climbed up to 72.7%.

The inflation slowed to 4.2% in May and in the first five months of the year it climbed 71.9%, as reported by the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INDEC). In the year-on-year comparison, it rose 276.4%.

The division with the greatest increase in the month was Communication (8.2%), due to increases in telephone and internet services. They followed Education (7.6%), due to increases at all educational levels, and Alcoholic beverages and tobacco (6.7%) due to the increase in cigarettes.

Meanwhile, the division of Food and non-alcoholic beverages (4.8%) was the one with the highest incidence in all regions, due to increases in vegetables, tubers and legumes; milk, dairy products and eggs; and oils, fats and butter.

The cost of total basic basket (CBT)which measures the poverty line, rose 2.8% in May, while in year-on-year terms the increase was 290.7%, above the general inflation that gave a 276.4% for the same period. Thus, a family made up of two adults and two minors needed $851,351 to avoid falling into poverty during the fifth month of the year, according to INDEC.
