Transport: Passenger association: EM shows weaknesses of the railway very clearly

How well or badly are things really going for the railways during the European Football Championship? A passenger representative takes stock.

According to the passenger association Pro Bahn, Deutsche Bahn has confirmed its bad reputation during the European Football Championship. Association head Detlef Neuß told the “Rheinische Post”: “At the moment, the deficits of the railway are being underlined.” The weaknesses are particularly evident in local transport, given the many delays and overcrowded trains. In this area, there is a lack of special trains or staff on standby.

“Of course it’s not the company’s fault if trams in Gelsenkirchen, for example, can’t cope with the crowds coming from the stadium,” said Neuß. But if the whole world “makes fun of our rail system, I hope that this is also a wake-up call for politicians.” It cannot be that billions of euros for renovation are ultimately invested in the road.

The promises made by the railway company before the tournament were “more than optimistic”. The association’s recommendation to travel to the venues as early as possible if you are travelling by train still applies. Recently, reports from foreign media about train breakdowns and overcrowded platforms have caused a stir.
