The Corona pandemic has accelerated the use of home offices extremely. After the end of the pandemic, use is slowly declining again.
Employees in Germany are using home offices less often than in previous years marked by Corona. The proportion of employees who do their job at least part of the time from home remained roughly the same last year at 23.5 percent, according to the Federal Statistical Office.
However, more people (44 percent) reported that they do their tasks at their workplace at least as often. In 2022, only 39 percent reported this. The proportion of those who work exclusively from home also fell from 31 percent in 2022 to 26 percent last year.
Industries with little home office
Employees in the healthcare, retail and construction sectors are particularly seldom using home working because it is often not possible. On the other hand, the options are widespread among IT service providers, where 74.7 percent of their employees work from home. There are also high proportions in insurance and management consultancy firms.
With the values from the microcensus, Germany was slightly above the home office average in the European Union in 2023, which was put at 22.4 percent of all employed persons. The highest rate was in the Netherlands, where more than half (52 percent) of the employed persons worked from home at least part of the time.
