Major order: Bundeswehr buys Airbus satellites for 2.1 billion euros

New satellites, new possibilities: The German army is spending billions on high-tech satellites to be able to process larger amounts of data. When will they be ready for use?

The German army has awarded Airbus a major contract for the construction of two telecommunications satellites. The contract is worth 2.1 billion euros and includes satellites and the associated ground stations, the Munich-based aviation and defense company announced.

According to Airbus, the new systems should be able to keep up with larger data transmission volumes and weigh around six tons. Key parts came from Germany. The German army wants to put the telecommunications satellites into operation before the end of the decade. According to Airbus, they should be operated for a period of 15 years.
