These are the most livable cities in the world – Germany is falling behind

Vienna is and remains the most livable city in the world. For years, the Austrian capital has topped the annual rankings of the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU). Vienna came first in 2018, 2019, 2022 and 2023. In 2024, the city will also receive full marks in the categories of stability, education, infrastructure and healthcare.

The ten most livable cities in the world in 2024 are all familiar faces, only the order has been mixed up. As in the previous year, the Danish capital Copenhagen comes in second place. Zurich in Switzerland, however, climbs up the rankings from sixth to third place, while Melbourne slips to fourth place, followed by the newcomers Calgary in Canada and Geneva in Switzerland. Sydney in Australia loses three places and falls back to seventh place. Vancouver in Canada, Osaka in Japan and the New Zealand capital Auckland complete the top ten of the most livable cities in the world.

Most livable cities: no German metropolis among the top ten

After Frankfurt was able to take seventh place in 2022, German metropolises are not at the top again this time, just like last year, and are even slipping further. Berlin falls from 17th to 21st place. Hamburg loses five places, Munich six – they now jointly occupy 27th place. Stuttgart, which had recently made up ground, drops from 25th place to 30th place this year. Düsseldorf, still in 29th place in 2023, has to make do with 33rd place.

The Global Liveability Index is compiled annually. 173 cities are evaluated based on various criteria in the areas of culture and environment, infrastructure, education, health system and stability. Western European cities have recently been particularly affected by a lack of stability. In the overall evaluation, they lost 0.3 points compared to the previous year. The reasons given include geopolitical conflicts, an increase in crime, civil unrest and the number of protests, as well as the real estate crisis.

The biggest drop, however, is Tel Aviv. The war in the Gaza Strip has had a significant impact on the quality of life there, and there is a lack of stability. The Israeli city has fallen 20 places to 112th place in the Global Liveability Index.
