Renewable energies: Associations: discuss balcony power plants with landlords

Last week, the Bundestag made it easier to install balcony power stations. Landlords can no longer refuse them without reason. However, there are a few things to consider.

Tenant and owner associations welcome the simplification of the installation of balcony power plants. “Today, everyone would like to do something to protect the climate and also save a little,” says Inka-Marie Storm, chief legal officer of the nationwide property owners’ association Haus und Grund. However, there are a few things to consider: You can’t just go to a hardware store or online and buy a balcony power plant, says the lawyer. Even if landlords cannot prohibit the installation in principle, the installation must still be discussed with them. In the case of property owners’ associations in particular, it can take time until approval is granted. In addition, the installation must be carried out professionally.

“For the moment, it is a huge relief for tenants,” says Zakaria Said, legal advisor at the Magdeburg Tenants’ Association. “But it is still important to discuss this thoroughly with the landlord.” This also includes security and liability obligations.

Last week, the Bundestag decided to ease the installation of so-called plug-in balcony power plants. Before the law comes into force, it must be approved by the Bundesrat and published in the Federal Law Gazette. According to a spokesperson for the Federal Ministry of Justice, the law is therefore not expected to come into force before mid-October.
