Tourism: FTI bankruptcy causes booking numbers to rise among competitors

After the insolvency of the tour operator FTI, customers are reorienting themselves. Tui, DER Touristik and Alltours are recording increasing booking numbers.

The insolvency of the tour operator FTI is leading to an increase in booking numbers for the remaining tour operators. Following the market leader Tui, DER Touristik and Alltours are now also reporting significant growth. “We are currently seeing a significant increase in guests – also influenced by the changed market conditions,” said Ingo Burmester, head of the Central Europe region at DER Touristik with the brands Dertours, ITS and Meiers Weltreisen. “In the coming months, we are expecting around 400,000 additional guests in summer and winter bookings.”

Alltours spoke of double-digit growth rates. “With the additional demand effect from the FTI insolvency, we are expecting record growth of over 20 percent in the current financial year,” said a spokesperson for the German Press Agency. “We have taken over FTI quotas from hotels and airlines for the summer across all travel destinations and have thus further expanded our short-term and last-minute offerings.”

Sudden increase in bookings

Market leader Tui had already reported a sharp increase in booking numbers in June and added 300,000 additional places to its program for the summer. A further 150,000 places will be added in winter. “The holiday destinations around the Mediterranean are more popular than ever and ensure that we can once again surpass the already good booking situation from last summer,” said Tui Germany boss Stefan Baumert, according to the statement. After the FTI bankruptcy, bookings rose again sharply.

FTI, previously the third largest German tour operator after Tui and DER Touristik, filed for bankruptcy at the beginning of June and shortly afterwards cancelled all trips that had already been booked. Payments already made for package tours were secured through the German Travel Insurance Fund.
