Work in the port of Hamburg has been suspended since Tuesday morning. The Verdi union has announced demonstrations. This is not the first industrial action in the port.
Another warning strike is underway in the port of Hamburg. “The strike began as planned with the early shift at 6:30 a.m.,” said a spokesman for the Verdi union. The employees initially went on strike in a decentralized manner in front of their companies, and there will be a demonstration on Wednesday.
With the all-day warning strikes in the port of Hamburg on Tuesday and Wednesday, the Verdi union says it wants to increase the pressure on employers in the collective bargaining negotiations for employees in seaports.
With a collective agreement running for twelve months, Verdi is demanding, among other things, an increase in hourly wages of three euros retroactively to June 1st and a corresponding increase in shift allowances. Another round of negotiations between Verdi and the Central Association of German Seaport Operators (ZDS) is planned for July 11th and 12th in Bremen. There were already warning strikes in several northern German ports in June, including Hamburg.
