Many holidays make May a popular month for short breaks. Hotels are registering record numbers of overnight stays.
German domestic tourism is booming. Hotels and other accommodation establishments with at least ten beds registered more overnight stays in May than ever before in this month. 48.9 million overnight stays represent an increase of 4.1 percent compared to the previous record May in 2023, as the Federal Statistical Office reports on the basis of preliminary data. The figure from the pre-Corona year 2019 was even exceeded by almost 10 percent. Only 15 percent of overnight stays in May were booked by guests from abroad.
“The Whitsun holidays, which began a little earlier this year than in 2023, certainly provided a tailwind,” said Norbert Kunz, Managing Director of the German Tourism Association (DTV). “It remains to be seen how the summer develops.” He was optimistic about June and July. “The European Football Championship will have a positive effect on the number of overnight stays by foreign guests.”
