Coal imports from Kazakhstan to Ukraine do not occur due to the blockage of transit. This was announced on Wednesday, January 5, by the Minister of Energy of Ukraine Herman Galushchenko. According to him, Russia is allegedly responsible for this.
“No, it doesn’t come from Kazakhstan (coal. – Ed.). There is a signed contract with “Centrenergo” for 660 thousand tons of Kazakh coal during the heating season. But, unfortunately, through the appropriate actions of the Russian Federation, the transit of this coal through the Russian territory is blocked. Now we do not see a physical opportunity to get this coal, ”he said at a briefing.
On December 13, the head of Naftogaz, Yuri Vitrenko, said that a difficult situation with coal had developed in the country, but the company could insure power generating enterprises.
On November 21, Ukraine received the first consignment of coal from the United States under contracts concluded by DTEK (Donbass Fuel and Energy Company). The volume of the first batch was 60.5 thousand tons.
There is a shortage of coal in Ukraine. Experts and deputies say about the most severe energy crisis. At the same time, the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said on November 15 that the state is successfully coping with the challenge of the coal shortage. He assured that coal from the United States, along with what is mined in Ukraine itself, “completely covers the need for the energy sector by the end of the year.”
On November 2, the country’s former foreign minister, Pavel Klimkin, announced that the coming winter would be extremely difficult for Ukraine. He noted that at current energy prices, the country will not be able to survive another heating season.
